Everything You Need to Know About Dentures

At Chattanooga Dental Studio, our mission is to create beautiful, healthy smiles for patients of all ages throughout the Chattanooga area. And while a strong oral hygiene routine can preserve your natural teeth for a lifetime, for many patients, there comes a time when it’s time to replace the natural teeth with dentures. If you think dentures might be right for you and want to learn more, we’re here to help.

DENTURES 101

Put simply, dentures are sets of false teeth that are used to replace natural teeth that are missing or damaged beyond repair. While partial dentures can be made to replace only a few teeth, the most common thing is for patients to replace an entire dental arch with dentures. Dentures are usually made from a high-quality dental resin that’s shaped and color-matched to precisely replicate the look of your natural teeth, and they’re seated in place using a special dental adhesive.

While removable dentures are the most common, they’re not the only option. In addition to creating removable dentures that are kept in place with adhesive, we can also use dental implants to support dentures. Implants are a great option because they distribute bite pressure throughout the jawbone in the same way that natural teeth do, helping to prevent bone loss that can be caused by removable dentures. With implant-supported dentures, we’re often able to use only 6, 5, or even 4 dental implants to support an entire dental arch, and we can make implant-supported dentures to be removable or permanent.

If you do choose to replace your teeth with dentures, it’s important to take good care of them. While permanent implant-supported dentures can be brushed and flossed like normal teeth, removable dentures should be soaked in water with a denture-cleaning tablet periodically to remove food and bacterial buildup. With proper care, dentures will help restore your smile and keep it healthy for a lifetime!
